CHAPTER FIVE

He put the Mustang away in the huge parking garage once more and had hailed a gondola back to the hotel. He went to his room at once and found it had been put back in order, tables straightened up, bed made, chairs and cushions righted and replaced. He sat down at the edge of the bed and had one hand on the phone to call Dorrie when he saw the two envelopes on the end table. One, square and beige, was addressed to him in Dorrie’s fluid, strong handwriting. He tore it open quickly.

Jeff—

I’m still fuming over your sneaking out of the party without saying goodby. And you were pretty damn uncivil to Cesare Gallermo, too.

I tried calling you but kept getting no answer this morning so I’m leaving this note for you. Umberto woke me to tell me that he had to go to a special hush-hush meeting with some possible backers for Cesare. He absolutely insisted that I go along and said we’d get in a few days skiing at the same time.

That I couldn’t resist! So, as of tonight I’ll be at the new ski lodge above Vipiteno—Downhill Meet, they call it. Come up, bring your old papers with you and I’ll sign them here.
